"DOCK-it"
Under Monterey Wharf
Persimmon Quilt Challenge #3
Monterey California 2016
My husband and I took a much needed overnight vacation which included a whale watching trip on the Monterey Bay. The Monterey Bay has a 3000 foot canyon down the middle of it which attracts a lot of whale, dolphins, and all types of sea life, oh and lots of humans too.
There were many beautiful boats taking people out to go whale watching. We were NOT on one of those boats! I had pre-purchased our tickets through a Group-on site, which offers deep discounts. Needless to say I was highly disappointed to see the boat we were to go on and almost scrapped the trip. My fear and disappointment was on high alert as we descended down many steps to our little boat. Ginger in my stomach and lots of self talk were what I needed to see the beauty laid before me under the Monterey Wharf. The above boat was not ours but it was pretty darn close to it. And I must say the skipper and boat trip was fantastic! Randy's Whale Watching is the place to go to be close to water and hence close to the whales. Our boat was very nice. Plus you get to see under the wharf.
This was our view once inside our boat, the rail in the photo is the boat rail. We were very close to the water.
PFD (prepared for dying) fabric was ironed onto an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of freezer paper and put through the printer using Dura Coat ink. Dura Coat ink will not smear of your fabric.
I glued some fun yard around the edge and liked the outcome.
Quilt Challenge #3 almost didn't happen. I'm so glad I moved ahead and worked on this piece. I've been haunted by this structure since first lying my eyes on it. It is amazing. I can't wait to visit Randy's again in the near future not to just see this structure again, but to be so close to the water and the experience. Perhaps on a clear day.
What an exquisite art quilt to commemorate your Monterey visit. Your quilting adds so much beautiful texture to the wonderful photo...just fabulous!!
